Kick-start a new edition of Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest May 2013 ValenciaFans of the German culture, and of course, beer, cannot miss the sixth edition of Oktoberfest taking place in Valencia’s Plaza de Toros from today until 5th May.

Among the novelties, there will be a traditional band to liven up both lunch and dinner with polkas and typical Bavarian tunes.

Included in the programme of activities is a “sausage day”  and a “master brewer’s day”, and well as an “Erasmus special” and a “Viking party”. Oktoberfest Valencia has its doors open from 12:30 midday until the early hours of the morning.

Sixth edition Oktoberfest Valencia - 2013The first Oktoberfest in Germany was celebrated from the 12th October until the 17th October 1810 to rejoice at the marriage of Prince Luis I of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. It consisted of a simple horse race competed in Theresienwiese, a large open space close to the central train station in Munich. Only in 1887 did the “Wirte”, or owners of the breweries, get together for the first time, giving rise to the modern version of the festival we know today. However, in spite of what its name indicates, nowadays the festival starts in September instead of October.

In recent years Munich’s Oktoberfest has received millions of visitors and has become the most important popular festival in Germany. The official opening takes place when the mayor of Munich taps the first barrel of beer with the cry of “O ‘zapft is!”, or “it’s tapped!”
