China at the forefront of investment interest following the passing of the ‘Entrepreneurship Law’

In September 2013, the Law to Support Entrepreneurs and their Internationalisation came into force. Amongst this law’s functions is the significant support it provides in attracting foreign investment to our country, particularly that related to the acquisition of property with a value of €500,000 or more. As is now widely known, such a transaction is accompanied with the concession of a visa and, later, a residency permit to the foreign investor and his/her spouse and children under the age of 18. Another advantage that this investment in Spain brings is the possibility of being able to circulate freely between countries pertaining to the Schengen area.

Chinese businesses and nationals now more confident when investing in Spain

There is no doubt that Spain represents an attractive country to Chinese nationals, and this has been demonstrated by the rise in the number of Chinese tourists visiting our country. In 2013, this number reached 211,000, which represents a 50% increase compared to the previous year. However, despite this notable rise in interest in our country, the number of Chinese visitors is still far from that of British or German tourists (13 and 8 million respectively in the last year). Nevertheless, certain obstacles which hinder Chinese tourists wanting to visit Spain, such as a lack of flight connexions between both countries, are beginning to be overcome. For example, Air China has now opened an air link between Barcelona and Beijing, with a changeover in Vienna.

The Valencian Community leads the way in property sales to foreigners

On July 7, an event was held in Madrid, dedicated to analysing the economic impact in Spain and the Valencian Community of the acquisition of property by foreigners. The day was organised and promoted by the Valencian regional government, la Generalitat, via the 'Comisión para el análisis, impulso y reactivación de la actividad productiva y el empleo mediante el incremento de la adquisición, arrendamiento y uso de viviendas por ciudadanos del resto de Europa' (Commission for analysing, incentivising and reviving productive activity and employment, through an increase in acquisition, rental and use of property by citizens from the rest of Europe).
